  1. The revolt 1857-58 of the Bengal army against
  2. the British in India. The movement was
  3. confined to the north, from Bengal to the
  4. Punjab, and central India. The majority of
  5. support came from the army and recently
  6. dethroned princes, but in some areas it
  7. developed into a peasant rising or general
  8. revolt. It included the seizure of Delhi by
  9. the rebels, and its siege and recapture by
  10. the British, and the defence of Lucknow by a
  11. British garrison. The mutiny led to the end
  12. of rule by the East India Company and its
  13. replacement by direct crown administration.
